Your next user is an AI agent你的下一個使用者,是 AI agent
Why the next real user of your product may be an AI agent: what changes for product thinking, docs, and interfaces when software starts using your software.
AI agents are starting to do what your human users do: sign up, read docs, click buttons, move data around. Designing only for people already feels dated. The question shifts from how it looks on screen to how it feels as an environment that other software can safely and intelligently act inside.
YC RFS: agents as serious customers
Y Combinator’s Requests for Startups treat AI agents as a real platform shift, not a side feature. When agents can browse, operate SaaS tools and orchestrate workflows, every product becomes a building block inside someone else’s meta product. That means your onboarding, pricing, permissions and rate limits should assume that a power user may actually be an autonomous cluster of agents.
llmstxt: make your product legible at token level
llmstxt argues that if you want models to use your content well, you must feed them a version that is structured, scoped and stable. The same idea applies to products: agents need clean URLs, predictable copy and interaction flows that change slowly. Think of your UI as prompt engineering for future agents, where every label, empty state and error message is part of the context window.
Anthropic: agents need guardrails, not just capabilities
Anthropic’s engineering notes on effective agents highlight how quickly autonomous tools can drift without tight scopes and safety checks. For product teams that means treating every exposed action and API as something an unsupervised intern might press repeatedly. Clear permissions, reversible operations and composable smaller tools make your product safer and more attractive as an environment for agents.
A short prep list for “agent ready” products
- A human first UI whose copy and structure are stable enough that agents can learn it
- A minimal, well documented surface area of actions and APIs that represent real jobs to be done
- Rate limits, audit logs and permission tiers that assume automated, high velocity usage
- A machine readable slice of your docs or UI text, kept in sync and versioned
- A sandbox or staging space where agents can safely explore without hurting real data
The takeaway
- Treat agents as power users that learn your product once then scale it beyond human pace
- Make your UI, URLs and docs legible so that models can reliably read and act on them
- Design guardrails around every action so autonomous usage is safe by default
Anthropic:agent
